History and Achievements of Providence Missionary Baptist Church

The late Rev. Marvin Randle organized Providence Missionary Baptist Church on July 11, 1964, with 15 members. Providence held services in a building on 103 North Acme Road from 1964 until 1968. In 1968, God blessed Providence to build a new sanctuary in its present location, 6739 Monterey Street. Providence was blessed with as many as 100 members under the leadership of Rev. Randle. Membership declined after
some military members moved and others went to various churches. Rev. Randle was one of God’s great evangelists, he was known to walk up and down the streets of this community telling people about salvation in Jesus Christ. In 1987, God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to call our beloved Pastor, Founder, Organizer, and Builder, home to his reward. Because of the ministry of Rev. Marvin Randle, many people in the community have come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. God did not leave Providence without a shepherd after He called Rev. Randle
home. The late Rev. Rudolph Jones served faithfully as Pastor from 1988-1998. Rev. Jones continued the legacy of education that the late Rev. Randle had started. Under the leadership of Rev. Jones, the mortgage note was burned in 1994 and the church treasury grew and would later become the primary means of being able to build the Fellowship Hall. Rev. Kennith G. Rogers and Rev. Thomas Gregory assisted Rev. Jones at various times when he became ill toward the later part of his ministry. In 1998 God called Rev. Rudolph Jones is home to his reward. Rev. Gregory served as Interim Pastor from November 1998 until April 1999.

In May 1999, the call went out to Rev. Lonnie Franklin. Under the leadership of Rev. Franklin, several youths were baptized. Rev. Franklin had a vision that Providence would prosper and grow in number, so he encouraged the church to build a Fellowship Hall. Rev. Franklin did not see the completion of the Fellowship Hall because his job at Kelly AFB transferred him to Oklahoma in November 2000.

Rev. Willingham served as Interim Pastor until Rev. Kennith G. Rogers was called to be Interim Pastor in February 2001. Under the leadership of Pastor Rogers, the church was remodeled and the Fellowship Hall was completed. Although the members had plans to call Rev. Rogers as
their Pastor, he informed the church that the work that the Lord sent him to do was completed.

On August 8, 2001, Rev. Larry K. Glass was called as Interim Pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church. On October 14, 2001, Rev. Glass was elected as Pastor. Under the leadership of Pastor Glass, many sheep have been added to the flock, primarily by baptism. Under the leadership of Pastor Glass, several ministries have been organized, including the Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Vacation
Bible School, Leadership Ministry, Care Ministry, Prison Ministry, and a Comprehensive Accounting System. Four Choirs were organized as well as an Ushers Ministry. In Rev. Glass’ first year as Pastor, two Deacons were ordained. In April 2003, Rev. Dennis
Whitley was ordained. The Founder’s wife, Sis. Arvella Randle Hysaw went to be with the Lord in August 2003. In January 2007, Pastor Glass appointed Rev. Dennis Whitley as Assistant Pastor. Providence was blessed to burn the note in the Fellowship Hall onFebruary 18, 2009, 7 years early, resulting in tremendous savings for Providence.

On December 5, 2010, Pastor Glass informed the church that God was moving him in a new ministry direction and submitted his resignation effective December 31, 2010. Rev. Dennis Whitley was elected as Interim Pastor effective January 1, 2011.

In February 2012, Dennis A. Whitley was installed as Pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church. The members of Providence have strived diligently to maintain and beautify the Church, as well as continue the great work the Lord has given us.
